What inspired you to work in pediatrics?
Growing up my father was a Johnson & Johnson rep and my mom was a teacher, I wanted to be like both of them and decided to go into medicine. The specialty that gives you more opportunity of teaching is Pediatrics, since everyday we face as pediatrician the challenge of teaching parents and children how to navigate through that beautiful journey of growing up.
What unique qualities, skills, or services set you apart, and how do you build a positive rapport with patients and their families?
As a fellow for almost 15 yrs of the American Academy of Pediatrics I excel on following their recommendations and guidelines. I was also a psychotherapist which gave me a strong background in behavioral disorders. Also submitted several publications at Columbia University in Obesity which helped me to have develop extensive knowledge in nutrition.
How do you accommodate patients with special needs?
There's different ways to accommodate special need children, like:
Creating Individualized care plans: working with families to create a care plan that may include a combination of behavioral therapy, medication, occupational therapy, and more, focusing on maximizing the child's potential.
Multi-disciplinary team coordination: They often act as a central point of contact, coordinating with other professionals like psychologists, speech therapists, and special educators to ensure all aspects of the child's care are addressed.
Therapy referrals: We can prescribe and monitor physical, occupational, and speech therapies, and refer families to specialized developmental pediatricians for more in-depth evaluations and treatment options.
