Q&A with Dr. Lanphere
What is your favorite animated movie or cartoon?
My favorite animated movie is Zootopia because it creatively combines a witty detective story with an important message about the danger of bias and human struggles. I enjoyed Judy Hopp’s brave character. I especially appreciated when she humbled herself
What is your favorite children's book?
My favorite children's book is Pilgrims Progress, an allegory about a man who journeys through life's ups and downs while keeping his faith and eventually arrives at his final destination, the Celestial City. I love the underlying message in this book that with faith it is possible to overcome fear, doubt and adversity.
What was your favorite childhood toy?
My favorite childhood toy was my kitchen set. I enjoyed using my imagination to serve imaginary guests and create delicious meals.
Who is your greatest inspiration?
One of my inspirations is Amy Carmichael, who was an Irish Christian missionary in the late 1800’s-early 1900s. She spent 55 years in India, where she rescued hundreds of vulnerable children, especially young girls, from dangerous cultural practices and exploitation. She inspires me because of her courage to stand up to evil and to sacrificially help young people.
What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?
My hobbies and interests outside of work are spending time with my family, trips to Disney World, going to the beach, reading and running.
What inspired you to work in pediatrics?
My passion for children’s health began in high school while shadowing my own pediatrician. I saw the difference a good pediatrician can make in a child's life by the way they interact and connect with the family and child. It was also very rewarding to be able to watch a child as they grow and develop into an adult.
What unique qualities, skills, or services set you apart, and how do you build a positive rapport with patients and their families?
As a general pediatrician, I excel at communicating with families and children by asking open-ended questions and allowing for the conversation to develop naturally. I am particularly good with newborn care. I am also passionate about behavioral, developmental and preventative care. However, I am well-rounded and enjoy all areas of pediatrics and take great joy in advocating for patients and their families.
How do you accommodate patients with special needs?
I take care to accommodate patients with special needs by taking time to observe, understand, and take notes on each child's unique needs during the visit. For example, if a child needs to have a particular fidget toy or gadget, be examined in a particular manner, or if the staff has to interact in a more intentional way so that the child feels comfortable, I take a mental note and communicate with the staff to let them know. I also take notes on sensory triggers that need to be avoided in the exam room. When possible, I use visual aids and simple communication. I cooperate with families and caregivers to make sure their child has the best experience possible. Lastly, I take additional steps to coordinate care with specialists and I advocate for my patients when needed.
