Q&A with Dr. Harley
What is your favorite animated movie or cartoon?
Moana and Encanto are my favorites. I think I’m more excited to see Moana 2 than my daughter is.
What is your favorite children's book and why?
Any of the stories from the “Amelia Bedelia” collection.
What was your favorite childhood toy?
Barbies
Who is your greatest inspiration and why?
My Mother
What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?
Playing tennis and spending time with my family.
What inspired you to work in pediatrics?
My brother inspired me to become a doctor/pediatrician. He was born with cerebral palsy and I’ve always wanted to understand more about his diagnosis.
What unique qualities, skills, or services set you apart, and how do you build a positive rapport with patients and their families?
I think I do a good job of actually listening to my patients and their parents. I feel very strongly about shared decision making between myself and the family and I never want a parent to feel like they are being told what to do. I would prefer our visits to be more of a discussion where the main focus is whatever is best for the child.
How do you accommodate patients with special needs?
I let the patient tell me or show me what they’re comfortable with. I let them hold and play with the tools we use so that they aren’t afraid and so that they have a sense of control during the visit. We also give out lots of stickers if necessary. :-)
